This is the story of the legendary Brazilian Formula One race-driver Ayrton Senna and his tragic death at the age of 34. It is a documentary but it seems more like one of the most skilfully written, beautifully shot dramas you have ever seen. The footage is all original – compiled either from home movies or television coverage and even specially mounted cameras on his car. The way these are woven together and the matter-of-fact narration heighten the dramatic tension of his unfolding rivalry with French driver Alain Prost and the partisan politics and distasteful egos of some of those involved in the sport.
The portrayal of Senna as patriot, dutiful son, passionate motor-racing driver and fun-loving sportsman are bound up in his relentless ambition to be the best and this momentum is carried throughout the film towards its inevitable end. Voice overs from Senna’s sister, his doctor and other team members all contribute towards a complete understanding of Senna’s character and we see all of his sides: ambitious, vulnerable, competitive, charming, altruistic – even spiritual.
Whether you like Formula One racing or not, this powerful film is definitely one that will absorb you and stay with you.

This is a must see, well done for getting it on the programme Roger.
