This powerful, challenging and intriguing film studies the intergenerational consequences of an ongoing conflict in the Middle East, set during the civil war in theLebanonduring the 1970s.
It opens in present-day French Quebec where two twins, Jeanne and Simon Marwan, are being read the will of their mother. Her last wish is that they deliver two letters: one to their father, presumed dead, and the other to a brother that they didn’t even know they had. This quest takes them toLebanon, the country their mother had emigrated from, and there begins a journey that jolts their senses – and yours.
The story is told through frequent flash-backs to the past when the mother was a girl and then jumps back to the present, not always obviously. The on-going search keeps us glued to the screen as we follow the clues together with the main characters. What starts out in the style of a detective thriller ends as a Greek tragedy but with a strong message about the importance of letting go hatred.
This is a well-paced film with impressive cinematography and sensitive performances – one that will stay with you.
